Medicine Hat voters have spoken!
In the Mayoral race, Linnsie Clark was re-elected with 5,875 votes, closely followed by Drew Barnes, who received 5,108 votes.
Her re-election comes after a turbulent previous term, during which City Council sanctioned her following a tense public meeting with the City Manager in 2023.
While voters chose to return her to office, it was with a dramatically smaller mandate of less than 33% support compared to the 66% support she received four years ago!
For City Council, voters chose eight entirely new representatives.
Yusuf Mohammed led the field with 8,242 votes, followed by Ted Clugston with 7,757, Stuart Young with 7,006, Chris Hellman with 6,610, Bill Cocks with 4,455, Cheryl Phaff with 4,378, Dan Reynish with 3,969, and Brian Varga with 3,870.
Of the eight previous Councillors, four chose not to run again, Andy McGrogan lost his bid for Mayor, and Robert Dumanowski with 3,756 votes, Alison Van Dyke with 3,139, and Shila Sharps with 1,695 votes all failed to get re-elected.
Overall, this election represents a significant shift in City Council.
The new Council will need to address critical issues, including fiscal responsibility, local services, and rebuilding trust between City Hall and the community.
As Mayor Clark and the new Council members take office, the coming months will reveal how this team works together to meet the City’s challenges and deliver results for residents.
Linnsie Clark will get another chance with a completely new Council, but the huge drop in her support puts her on notice for 2029.
One thing is certain - Medicine Hat voters are expecting leadership that listens, acts decisively, and puts the city’s priorities first.
