The City has awarded five applicants the sea cans that were previously located in Towne Square, with a deadline of April 15th to relocate them from Marshall Yard. The City received 14 applications after opening submissions in January for residents, businesses, and community groups to propose new uses for the containers. Concerns over safety, vandalism, and break-ins led to the decision to remove the sea cans, which were originally arranged as market pods. The City has not disclosed the names of the successful applicants, who are now working with planning and development services, and in some cases Alberta Transportation, to secure necessary permits.
- The Public Services Committee received a presentation on Momentum, Medicine Hat’s 10-year Community Well-Being Plan, which outlines several strategic objectives to enhance residents' quality of life. The framework focuses on areas such as poverty reduction, community safety, health and wellness, lifelong learning, economic opportunities, diversity, reconciliation, civic engagement, and overall well-being. Proposed actions include modernizing housing policies, expanding public services, supporting alternative policing models, increasing access to health and addiction resources, and fostering inclusive community spaces. The plan also emphasizes economic growth by reducing regulatory barriers and attracting business investments while promoting reconciliation through Indigenous partnerships and education. Additionally, it aims to boost civic participation through volunteerism and stronger community connections.
- It was announced that Medicine Hat will receive a portion of the Alberta government's $19 million investment for flood and drought protection. The funding will support the construction of 300 meters of shoreline protection along the South Saskatchewan River to safeguard the Medicine Hat Waste Water Treatment Plant. The funding is part of a broader initiative that will support ten projects across Alberta.
