Medicine Hat Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Medicine Hat politics

📅 This Week In Medicine Hat: 📅

  • There will be a City Council meeting this afternoon, beginning with a closed session at 3:45 pm. Away from public view, Council will discuss Community Vibrancy Grant Distribution as well as Council Strategy and Policy Development. The Council meeting opens up to the public at 6:30 pm. Council will then discuss the recommendations of the recent Municipal Inspection. Key initiatives include updating Council orientation and governance refresher programs, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the Mayor, Council, and City Manager. Council will look to update bylaws and policies, including the Procedure Bylaw, Administrative Organization Bylaw, and City Manager/CAO Bylaw, to align with the Municipal Government Act and improve administrative efficiency. Most actions are targeted for completion between Q4 2025 and Q1 2026, with some long-term items extending into 2026 and 2027-2028 business planning cycles.

  • A surge in candidates is shaping up Medicine Hat’s October 20th municipal election, with 39 residents running for 8 council seats and 6 vying for Mayor. Observers attribute the increased interest to years of infighting and dysfunction at City Hall, including leadership crises, Council divisions, and a judicial review. Former Mayor and Councillor candidates, along with newcomers, said they want to restore collaboration, transparency, and effective governance. Many incumbents are not seeking re-election. Controversial issues in recent years, including electricity price spikes, a paused corporate utility plan, and backlash over the transportation plan, have energized voters and candidates alike. The crowded field reflects a community invested in change and a desire to improve local democracy. Candidates emphasize the need to “roll up sleeves” and tackle the significant challenges facing the City.

  • Over 300 people attended Medicine Hat’s municipal election forums hosted by the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce, held in 4 separate sessions due to a record number of candidates. Three forums focused on Council candidates, covering topics like government accountability, fiscal responsibility, local business growth, crime, and homelessness. Another forum was dedicated to Mayoral candidates, allowing them to give opening statements, answer questions, and deliver closing remarks on key City issues, including energy, small business support, and local taxes. The events were live-streamed, with recordings available on the Chamber’s website and YouTube for those unable to attend.

  • The Mustard Seed has withdrawn its application to rezone a property in Medicine Hat’s northwest for a potential shelter. The site at 2055 Saamis Drive NW was being considered for emergency shelter services, but both the City and The Mustard Seed received numerous concerns about its suitability for users and surrounding businesses. A public hearing scheduled for today was cancelled to allow time for further review and exploration of alternative locations. The City, along with the Province, plans to continue consulting on potential permanent sites and encourages community input. Officials emphasized the importance of balancing the needs of all stakeholders while finding a suitable location. Interim arrangements will be coordinated with The Mustard Seed and the Medicine Hat Community Housing Society to support those in need during the approaching winter months.

  • The City has begun its autumn winterization of outdoor washrooms and facilities. The process started with closures at Optimist Park ball diamond washroom and the Moose Ball Complex washroom/facilities. Additional closures will follow in stages: Ross Glenn Town Centre and Methanex Bowl on October 3rd; Big Marble Go Centre, Central Park, and Lions Park on October 6th; Jeffries Park, Police Point Park West, Saamis Rotary Park, and Echo Dale Swim Centre (with year-round washrooms still available at the Ajax Building) on October 13th; and Kin Coulee’s Band Shell, Kinette Kitchen, Little League ball diamond washroom, Kinsmen Skate Plaza, and Strathcona Island Park on October 20th.
