-
There will be a City Council meeting today at 2:30 pm. The meeting, as usual, begins with a closed session. Away from the public eye, Council will discuss Electric Substations Infrastructure Modernization, an energy business matter, the 2026 Calgary Stampede - “We Are Medicine Hat Event”, the airport, Heron Crossing, the Budget Committee, and upcoming budget-related closed Council sessions.
-
When the meeting opens up to the public, at 6:30 pm, Council will consider a proposal to adopt a new whistleblower policy aimed at improving internal reporting processes and protections. The recommendation includes allocating $100,000 from the operating reserve to implement the policy and rescinding the City’s current fraud and whistleblower policies once the new framework takes effect. Council will also review a request to extend the timeline for developing a policy on non-standard crosswalk pavement markings until the end of the third quarter of 2026, while deciding whether the issue should be addressed on its own or incorporated into a broader recognition and commemoration policy. Another decision could extend the term of the Interim City Manager until October 1st, allowing additional time while the City continues its leadership transition. Administration will present a report on the possibility of allowing urban hens within City limits and is being asked to draft a comprehensive bylaw based on best practices and public feedback. The report is also expected to outline anticipated costs and staffing needs, with a proposed bylaw scheduled to return to Council for consideration in the second quarter of 2026.

Medicine Hat is developing an interactive open data portal to provide real-time updates on municipal infrastructure, including roads, power lines, and underground pipes. This tool aims to increase transparency and assist the City in proactively managing assets to prevent major failures. The map categorizes piping by age and material; older iron-based pipes are prone to corrosion, while concrete pipes are sensitive to ground shifts. Most current piping uses modern PVC. By visualizing infrastructure conditions, the City intends to better communicate the necessity for capital funding and long-term maintenance. Additionally, the portal will track water quality and assist in estimating future project costs. While a demonstration was recently provided to Committee members, an official public release date for the in-house tool has not been announced.

A citizen-led petition to recall Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in her Medicine Hat riding failed after gathering 2,300 of the approximately 12,000 signatures required to move the process forward. Organizers initiated the effort due to concerns regarding representation and specific government actions, such as the use of the notwithstanding clause. Smith responded by thanking constituents for their support and stating her commitment to the government’s economic and social priorities. Similar petitions against other United Conservative Party caucus members, including Nate Glubish and Rebecca Schulz, also failed to meet necessary thresholds.
- Medicine Hat has been selected to host a Grand Slam of Curling Masters tournament in November 2026, bringing many of the world’s top curlers to the city. The six-day event will feature 16 men’s and women’s teams, including Olympians and world champions, competing for a share of $2.1 million in prize money. City officials expect the tournament, which will take place at Co-op Place and be broadcast nationally, to attract tens of thousands of spectators and provide a significant boost to local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Tourism leaders say events like this can also help showcase the community and encourage people to consider relocating to the city. A junior under-21 grand slam event will run alongside the main competition, giving younger athletes the chance to connect with elite players and gain exposure to high-level curling.
