• The Public Services Committee will meet today at 2:00 pm. On the agenda is an information-only update about the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games coming to Medicine Hat from August 11th to 15th, 2026. The City has committed a $300,000 operating grant toward the event, paid out in three $100,000 installments across 2024, 2025, and 2026, and is providing City facilities at no cost. The total event budget sits at $3.8 million. Organizers project more than $12 million in economic activity, with approximately 1,700 athletes and more than 3,500 spectators expected to attend.
  
  
• Justin Wright, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat, was appointed Alberta's Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services on May 22nd in a newly created cabinet role under Premier Danielle Smith. Wright described the appointment as among the greatest honours of his life, saying three years of conversations with families, seniors, and healthcare workers in his riding directly shaped his understanding of what the role requires. He pledged that his commitment to representing Cypress-Medicine Hat remains unchanged despite his expanded provincial responsibilities. 
  
  
• City staff are asking Council to approve a $1.057-million capital reserve budget increase to replace residential gas meters manufactured in 2013 that failed annual compliance sampling. The City, as a natural gas seller, must meet Measurement Canada requirements and replace the affected meters before the end of 2026 or face enforcement penalties ranging from $250 to $1,000 per instance of non-compliance. The problem is the degradation of internal mechanical parts over time - three groups of the same residential diaphragm meter type are affected. The City had been aware of the issue since 2024 compliance tests, when it received a two-year extension to address it, and paid more than $680,000 last year for meters that failed in service. Staff note that the City has been transitioning to a new meter technology without mechanical parts, but the legacy stock needs replacing now before the year-end deadline arrives.
  
  
• The City has opened a public survey through its Shape Your City platform seeking resident input on water-related challenges and priorities to inform a new Water Management and Adaptation Strategy. The strategy will integrate water supply, wastewater, stormwater, growth planning, and climate considerations into a single coordinated framework - addressing both day-to-day operations and longer-term pressures from aging infrastructure, weather events, and provincial regulations. The survey is open now and closes on Friday, June 19th, 2026. 
  
  
• The City of Medicine Hat is exploring a two-year Urban Hens Pilot Program that would allow urban residents to keep hens, and is now seeking public input before any bylaw is drafted. Council approved a motion on April 7th, 2026 to move from initial concept to public engagement, which is a required step before any bylaw development can begin. A survey is open on the Shape Your City platform until Friday, June 26th, 2026, and the feedback collected will inform the bylaw if Council ultimately decides to proceed. No decision on the program has been made. Residents who have strong views - in either direction - on backyard hens in the city have until late June to make their voices heard.
